Each year in May, the 6th graders at Magnolia have the wonderful opportunity to attend Science Camp, an extended coastal/environmental studies field trip to the Sonoma County coast and redwoods. For most students this will be one of the most memorable experiences they will have in their school life.
This program enables the students to participate in a wide range of classroom instruction and then to apply their classroom knowledge and skills in the field (outdoors, in a learning environment which is unique). The children become aware of the interrelations of a variety of organisms through observations and activities within their natural surroundings. Totally outside the walls of the conventional classroom, the children and teachers get to see one another in a completely different light than would be possible within the usual classroom environment. Often a child, who may not do well in the strictly academic structure of the classroom, excels in the outdoor and small group settings. Learn more about Science Camp.
Sixth Grade Fun Nights
Sixth Grade Fun Nights are a ton of fun and raise money to help pay for camp! Fun Nights are held 2 or 3 times per year, each with its own theme where students typically earn extra raffle tickets for dressing in costume or wearing something in theme. In addition to great music, games and contests, Fun Nights usually include a raffle with lots of great prizes. Many Fun Nights also offer souvenir photos and snack bars serving cold drinks and snacks and sometimes pizza as well. Students enjoy coming together and having a special night out just for them to hang out, talk with their friends and have some fun! Attending Sixth Grade Fun Night is a privilege and is only available to Magnolia students in good standing.
Students who wish to attend a fun night must bring a signed permission slip the week before the dance to purchase their ticket. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Students must purchase their tickets no later than lunchtime on the day of the event. Tickets typically cost $5 per admission and most dances also offer a package deal for $10 that includes your admission, pizza, drink and either candy or a souvenir photo. Most dances are Friday night from 7:00 -9:00 pm.
Some of the past fun nights include:
• Karaoke Night
• Limbo
• Relay races
• Glow Night
• “Walk Like an Egyptian”
• Indoor Soccer with Mr. Rodriguez
• “Principal’s Challenge” – Games with Mr. Rodriguez
All proceeds benefit the 6th Grade Science Camp.
Drama Productions
Several of the sixth grade teachers elect to do plays with their classroom. Most often these plays are related to the curriculum and give students an opportunity for stage experience, public speaking and also a deeper understanding of the subject they are studying. While some performances are done in class, many are treated as a full production with costumes and scenery and are performed on the main stage for the other Sixth Grade classes. These performances will be filmed by the Rattler PIT included in the Sixth Grade Highlight Videos available at the end of the year.
Some of the productions include:
Egyptian Cinderella
Egyptian Skits
Art Fairy Tales
Redwood Controversy (simulation debate)
Talent Show (Varies Year to Year)
Each year Mrs. Phelps, one of our outstanding 6th grade teachers, gathers up all the 6th grade performing talent and pulls together a wonderful talent show. Historically, the talent show has been held in spring and the rehearsals and performance happen during school hours. It is a lot of fun and a great experience for students.
Ancient Civilizations Market Day
As a culmination of their study of ancient civilizations, the sixth grade classes participate in Ancient Civilizations Market Day during the last week of school. Students form groups who are charged with coming up with a booth to offer goods or services. They are responsible for creating the idea as well as planning and running the booth the day of the event all using Greek “Drachma” as their currency. Booths may sell food or drinks, offer games or services such as face painting. Students dress in character and spend the week before the event earning "Drachma" that they can spend at the Market.
End of the Year BBQ
The last day of Sixth grade is celebrated with an of the year BBQ. The counselors from Science Camp, most of whom are students at BRHS, are invited to join the sixth graders as they have lunch, sign yearbooks and visit with friends.
